History
A bit about how we got to where we are today.
Background:
As our communications and networking needs have grown over the last
several years, a lack of robust high speed internet and communications infrastructure has
created a multitude of challenges. Residential and businesses
consumers need access to communications and the issue has become a substantial
obstacle to growth and efficiency. The Problem
Internet service providers are not currently able to provide residential and business consumers with cost effective true high speed network access including fiber access. I have spent many of the past years working aroundand dealing with problems of the existing networks, During research of the various options available to solve the problems, it became clearly evident that an effective solution requires intervention. Please see THIS REALLY GOOD VIDEO.
Many municipalities have started projects with similarities. These substantial network communications projects have generally been meet with good success.
The Alberta government got involved at a provincial level with the SuperNet. But anticipated advantages are largely unrealized; Private business, doctors, students and ordinary citizens throughout Alberta do not have access to the SuperNet.
There is considerable government support to get involved. The municipalities have a substantial role in helping Alberta's citizens realize the benefits of high speed network infrastructure. The benefits that broadband brings to a community are large and many. These benefits can be a powerful justification for obtaining funding.
Significant opportunities exist for a municipality to fulfill many of it's goals for all it's citizens. The SuperNet provides an excellent model to learn from.
